We went with Peggy and the Hwang's to Springfield, IL for a little family get-away. With the exception of our fun filled day at a water park on Saturday it was a very Lincoln weekend. We visited his home, law office and the Lincoln Presidential Museum and Library and the Lincoln tomb. The library was absolutely amazing. I could have spent a couple days there reading and exploring. It was fascinating. The girls enjoyed all of the historical stuff as well. I wasn't sure what to expect from the little ones, but they were really into it. Evangeline was all abuzz with questions. We talked about Lincoln the whole way home and read my Lincoln books from school that evening. After a while she said "oh, why can't I stop thinking about Abraham Lincoln?".... I was thinking the same thing. I even had a Lincoln dream last night.
The old capital.
It is pretty lucky that this building is still standing. It sounded like it was several things in the past hundred years, including a Kay Jewelers. They explained that it is the last sight standing where Lincoln had an office. The original wood floors are still used in the building. It was neat to imagine Lincoln walking on the same floors.
Evangeline picked out a Lincoln doll and a big penny for her souvenir. I tried to talk her into a bonnet, but she slowly pulled it off her head and said as she glared at me, "I. Look. Horrible.".
The Lincoln home has pretty much sat in it's original state all these years. There is so much original furniture in the home original to the Lincolns since they meant to move back to this house after their return from Washington D.C.
The tomb made me sad. It closed out our time in Springfield after living and breathing the Lincolns for the day. I learned so much about an era that fascinates me. I had a lot of things to research when we got home.
For good luck.....
Kyle bought a Lincoln bust for his office. It just seemed like he needed one to claim himself an official Illinois lawyer.
