It was a lovely birthday for little Evangeline. The weather was a perfect high 70's, a real gift in early August. We had a leisurely morning. Evangeline worked intently for at least an hour practicing her embroidery while I worked on a new sweater dress for her. We had fun doing our needlework together. Later that morning she had another Paint Like the Masters class at Gaslight where she created a beautiful cat painting. She loves those classes.
We had lunch at home with Kyle and then spent an hour at the good old Bouncing Barn, which was her birthday pick. Grandma met us there too.
When Kyle got home Evangeline opened her presents from Mommy and Daddy. Some of the special gifts we got her this year included a locket with our pictures inside, a wig (top on her list of birthday requests), a nightgown we got her in Florida and a quill pin.

That evening she could pick anywhere she wanted to go for dinner and she chose McDonald's for a Happy Meal. As luck would have it, Marshall was having a big-to-do on the court house lawn celebrating Marshall's 180th birthday. There were all kinds of activities including a petting zoo, face painting, balloon animals, bounce houses, etc., followed by the last band concert of the year. There were lots of her little friends out that night, which made it just about perfect.
I told Evangeline that she would be officially turning 6 around the last song of the band concert. When I noticed the time, I called her over and told her that she had been 6 years old for 6 minutes. She was so excited! As we were walking to the car she said, "did you notice all the things I can do now that I couldn't do before?" and "even my shadow is bigger". When we got to the car Kyle went to open the door for her and she immediately stopped him saying, "I can do it, I'm 6!".
Evangeline requested I make her a cake for her birthday this year. So the below picture is what my kitchen looked like around 10:00P.M. the night before her party. I had just finished YouTubeing my way through the decorating process. I told her I wasn't going to guarantee that it would look amazing since I've never made a decorated cake before. She told me, "I don't care how it looks as long as you try your best....I will love it no matter what." :)
The morning of her birthday I woke up to find, as I do almost each morning, my little chestnut-haired girl all snuggled up in our bed. This particular morning I snuggled her close, sank my nose into her hair and just thanked God for her. It's overwhelming sometimes how utterly thankful and blessed I feel that I have this little one to raise. I told her when I tucked her in that that night, that it's kind of like my birthday too, I've been a mommy for 6 years now, thanks to her.
